Introduction to the SSL AWS 948

The Solid State Logic (SSL) AWS 948 is a hybrid audio console - analogue mixing console with digital control surface. Features 24 Channel 48 Inputs 4-Band EQ 2 Assignable dynamics (compressor) 1 Master bus compressor 4 Fx sends Devices and connections SSL Alpha-link MADI SX - This is the a digital-to-analogue/analogue-to-digital converter. It is the interface for the SSL console with 24 analogue inputs and outputs that carries the analogue signal from the snake to the console and returns analogue signal from console back to it. This analogue signal is converted to digital signal and sent to the Avid HD MADI via MADI. This SSL interface also has a word clock. Avid HD MADI - This an interface for Pro tools that carries the digital signal sent from the SSL interface. The digital signal is then sent to Pro tools for digital processing and storage. This device also returns the digital signal from Pro tools to the SSL interface via MADI for listening through the monitors or analogue processing. MADI - Multichannel Audio Digital Interface supports up to 56 digital audio signals. This interface has an in and out port on the SSL interface and Avid HD MADI which carries the signal from SSL interface to Avid HD MADI and vice versa through a fibre-optic or coaxial cable. Word clock - Word clock is used to synchronize all digital devices in time and sample rate. Ethernet - This cable connects Pro tools and the console that enables the control of Pro tools from the control surface of the console. CPU - The computer where Pro tools is installed. Outboard Units - External outboard units like compressor or effects units that is connected to the console for signal processing.
